Is RaccoonType a Monkeytype clone or fork?
No. RaccoonType is a separate typing platform built from scratch. We share a similar minimal-typing-test core with Monkeytype, but RaccoonType adds a multiplayer party-race system, ranked ELO matchmaking, a deterministic 8-category Typing DNA analysis with AI-generated custom drills, code-typing practice in 14 programming languages, a daily global challenge, boss trials, and seasonal clan wars. RaccoonType is not built on the Monkeytype codebase.
Do I need to pay to use RaccoonType?
No. RaccoonType is free to use, like Monkeytype's free core. The typing test, multiplayer races, ranked ladder, daily challenge, and AI Coach are all available without a subscription. You can optionally sign in to sync progress across devices, earn seasonal XP, and join clans.
Does RaccoonType have themes and sound packs like Monkeytype?
Yes. RaccoonType includes 18+ themes and a sound-pack system. The themes control the visual keyboard, accent color, and background; the sound packs are independent of theme and can be mixed freely.
Can I race friends in real time like TypeRacer?
Yes. RaccoonType's party races support 2 to 8 players in the same room. Share a 4-character code or invite link. The countdown is server-authoritative so no one gets an early-key advantage. You can also play 1v1 ranked duels with ELO matchmaking.
What does RaccoonType offer that Monkeytype does not?
Multiplayer party races, ranked ELO with Glicko-style rating, 8-category Typing DNA with AI custom-drill generation, 14 programming languages for code-typing practice, daily global challenge, single-elimination tournaments, boss trials with unlock-by-WPM gating, and 3–5 member clan battles. RaccoonType is positioned as a performance platform, not just a typing test.
What does Monkeytype offer that RaccoonType does not?
Monkeytype has a longer feature history, a larger open-source community, and more third-party plugins. RaccoonType is a newer, more opinionated platform and does not currently have an open API for community themes. If you specifically need Monkeytype's exact feature set, Monkeytype is the right choice.
Can I bring my Monkeytype history with me?
There is no automatic history importer — Monkeytype exports stay in Monkeytype. The fastest migration is to run a few baseline tests on RaccoonType (same time/words/quote modes you already know) so the AI Coach can seed your Typing DNA, then jump into a party race with your friends.
Is RaccoonType open source?
No, RaccoonType is a closed-source product. Monkeytype is open source under the MIT license. If open source is a hard requirement for you, Monkeytype is the right choice.
